If you haven’t heard of hair porosity, it is a way to measure how your hair absorbs moisture. Knowing if you have low or high porosity can help you determine what products to use on your hair and even what methods to use for styling your hair. There is a quick and easy test that you can take in order to figure out your hair porosity. Fill a cup with water, then place a stand of your hair, maybe from a comb, and lightly place it into the cup. If your hair floats, it is low porosity. If it sinks it is high porosity and if it stays in the middle then you have “normal” porosity.

Here are some tips for each hair porosity type:
Low Porosity:
1. Use light oils:
Since low porosity hair has a hard time absorbing moisture using a light oil will not overwhelm your hair and will allow the moisture to lock inside your hair. My favorite light oil that has made my hair flourish is almond oil.
2. Protein sensitivity:
Low porosity hair is protein sensitive so you may want to avoid products with protein in them. You can still incorporate doing protein hair masks, such as rice water, but use it every two weeks instead of once a week.
3. Agua:
Since it can be harder for low porosity hair to receive and retain moisture, it is important that your hair is damp before you add oil or a moisturizer to your hair when styling. Using a spray bottle is very helpful in applying water to your hair before products.
High Porosity:
1. Quality products:
Since your hair absorbs moisture super easily you have to make sure that the products you are using are healthy for your hair so that your hair does not absorb toxic ingredients. Refer to my Are your hair products toxic post to check the ingredients in your products.
2. Cold rinses:
Since your cuticles open easily, they do not close as easily. Make sure to lock your hair with cold water after washing, especially if you wash your hair with warm water!
3. Agua:
High porosity hair dries quickly since it absorbs moisture quickly so it is also important to keep your hair moisturized throughout the day. Having a spray bottle handy after styling your hair to keep it hydrated throughout the day can be helpful. Adding drops of leave-in conditioner or oil in the spray bottle can help add extra moisture when spritzing your hair with water throughout the day or week.
