Hair that is dry and straggly at the ends,
Hair looking like tree branches at the ends,
Hair that is shedding so much that you’re a bit concerned?
Believe it or not, that's how my hair is looking like right now. I usually trim my hair regularly myself, but lately, I've gotten a bit lazy and now I’m way overdue.
Many girls are too afraid to get their hair trimmed frequently in fear of losing length, but in reality, you are preventing your hair from retaining the length that you already have. Just think, the ends of your hair are constantly coming in contact with the different fabrics of your clothes, brushes tugging through them, and hands playing in them. Even if you can’t see it, a lot of your hair has split ends or is just gone beyond repair from damage. Once your hair leaves your scalp it's considered dead cells, so the ends of your hair are practically zombies! I don’t follow a strict routine such as getting my hair trimmed every six months. I simply listen to my hair and notice if it has started to get dryer, has more knots, or has more split ends than usual. By not sticking to a strict routine I am able to not trim TOO much and risk my hair not being able to grow back fast enough (my main goal is length). Everyone’s hair is different so do what works for you!
Here are some different methods to trim your hair yourself since nobody will be going to a salon anytime soon…
I do recommend cutting your hair with scissors that are meant for hair since using other scissors can cause more split ends, so use at your own risk!
Here are the scissors that I use:

1. Two Braids
This is my favorite way to trim my hair though it won’t guarantee that your hair is super even. Since curls are very forgiving in that department, the health of my hair and ends is my main priority so that I can retain length. My curls will naturally blend together even if my hair is slightly uneven but this may not be the best way if you straighten your hair often.
For this method, you simply part your hair in the middle (don’t do a side part like I have accidentally done!) then french braid your hair from your hairline all the way down. After braiding both sides you can snip off the desired length of each braid. I will usually do about half an inch.
2. Twist it up
This method is a bit more time consuming since it requires you to do medium size twists all around your head. I will usually do this method when I am doing a twist out so my hair is already parted and twisted. I will trim the ends of each twist while it is still damp with product in it.
3. Split end scavenger hunt
This method is for perfectionists or people with time on their hands (which would be most of us now, I guess). I will do this when my hair is dry and simply sit in front of a mirror and examine all the ends of my hair. Whenever I see a split end or fairy knot on the ends of my hair I will snip it off. I will sometimes split my hair in fourths and work on each section at a time.
4. Unicorn Method
This is a method I just recently discovered from youtube. I have seen many videos on this method and though it was more frequently used for hair cuts (3+ inches off the ends) rather than trims (1” or less), I decided to try it out as my newest method of trimming my hair to help even my hair out. Basically, you put your hair in a tight ponytail at the very top of your head then hold it taught as you trim the end of the ponytail to the desired length.
