If you dream of having long healthy hair, those dreams are in your grasp! I have been on a journey to grow my hair for years now. Here are some of the main tips that I would recommend for you:

1. Weekly Hair Masks

Doing a hair mask doesn’t have to be reserved for special occasions. Just like face masks, hair masks are essential to giving your hair the protein and moisture that it needs to flourish. Through trial and error, I have realized that you do need a balance of protein and moisturize in your hair masks. I wanted my hair to be strong so I overloaded on protein hair masks, and though it did make my hair strong, it eventually started to weaken my hair stands. Now I rotate between doing a protein or moisturizing mask each week. For my protein mask, I make rice water- which is essentially water that is fermented with rice to receive all the benefits that rice has such as vitamins and protein. You can look up many DIY moisturizing masks but here are some of my favorite moisturizing masks to buy:

2. Microfiber Towel / T-shirt Dry

At the start of my hair journey, I used a regular towel to dry my hair but after doing research and hearing tips from others, I learned that regular towels can be damaging to your curls. Regular towels can dry out your hair and cause unneeded frizz. I now use a t-shirt or a microfiber towel hair wrap to dry my hair when I get out of the shower. My hair comes out less frizzy and much softer when I use this technique.

3. Frequent Trims

Keeping split ends at bay is key! There is no way for your hair to grow if it is constantly breaking off at the ends. If you want to stick to a 6-month schedule you can, but I only trim my hair when I feel like I need it. Also, I have a post up about 4 ways to trim your own hair at home so you can check that out to see how and when you should trim your hair!

4. Eating healthy

It is true, you are what you eat! If you are eating healthy, then your body and hair will be healthy. It is important to eat foods with a high amount of biotin. Biotin benefits your hair and skin and is found in most hair vitamins. Some of my favorite foods that are high in biotin include eggs, almonds, salmon, and sweet potatoes. Also, drinking plenty of water will also help with hair growth and the overall health of your hair.

5. Protective styles

Protective styling like buns and braids help to protect your hair from breakage by keeping the ends of your hair safe. When I first started doing my own hair in middle school, I would constantly put my hair in a top bun. I found that my hair was growing well due to my ends being tucked away. My favorite protective styles are french braids, buns, and box braids. Another tip that is not necessarily a style, is sleeping with a satin pillowcase or bonnet at night. Keeping your hair from rubbing against different textures of fabric will protect your hair from breaking off at the ends.

6. Limited heat

I’m not going to lie, I do enjoy switching up my look with a straightener every once in a while. I only straighten my hair once or twice a year and even with that little of heat, I still sometimes see a negative difference in my hair. Though I have no heat damage, some salons that I have gone to have left my hair feeling brittle and weak. To avoid this I have recently switched to straightening my hair myself so that I can use my own techniques and products. ALWAYS use a heat protectant and try not to touch up your straightened hair with more heat after the day that you’ve straightened it.
